Ola lovelies - my name is Sophie, mid-twenties and living in the wild land of Tasmania. Back during the days of scraping-the-bottom-of-the-piggy-bank-whilst-studying, I would often spot beautiful wares that were far from the norm and far from my budget - this has been the soul behind That Vintage from the get-go: to create different pieces of wearable art but within an affordable budget, so that those who adore can appreciate to the full.
It started out as a tiny hobby on the side from a bread-and-butter job and studying art - it quite quickly grew to something far bigger. Apart from my laser-man (pew pew!) That Vintage is a one-woman operation. I once use to think that running your own business would be a walk in the park, now I fully understand how doing this teaches you discipline and how to have a balance between creativity and operation... oh and how to resist tearing your hair out at the same time!
What inspires you? In one word: Nature. In a more elaborate statement: the branches of trees against a winter-grey sky, creating silhouettes and frames for life - a flock of birds sweeping down to meet on one bare branch; shapes and curves of leaves; intricate weaving patterns of nature. From this, the way in which nature is represented in print, fabrics and the beautiful art form of lace and crochet.
Do you have any future plans for your work, could you describe them? I love how That Vintage has created its own path since day one; it has been received so lovingly by all of the "lovers" out there; this sense of adoration has etched a fairly set path for the growth of the label. When inspiration crosses my path and the itch for "experimentation" begins, there is no limit - so I'm keen to run with whatever happens!
Where are your favourite places on-line?Pretty hooked on Etsy (etsy.com) and Made It (madeit.com.au) for online shopping, with the odd stop at the T2 Tea (t2tea.com.au) website. Love reading Studio Home (studiohomeonline.com) and Meet Me At Mikes (meetmeatmikes.blogspot.com) blog. And frequent internet pit-stops to the Frankie (frankie.com.au) and Peppermint Magazine (peppermintmag.com) sites.
What do you enjoy doing when you aren't busy making your wares? When I'm not head-down doing all things jewellery related, I'm either:
- working at my bread-and-butter job in fashion retail.
- sipping tea, checking out new music, browsing the web, reading the latest Frankie and Peppermint Magazines or snuggling my kitty Blossom.
- cooking, especially in winter: soups!
- being social with my lovely friends.
