Artist Interview: Chouette Clothing

Looking for adorable childrens clothing? Look no further! This boutique Auckland label, Chouette Clothing makes some of the most beautiful childrens clothing, you'll find them hard to resist. We are happy to have them at our first Fair... I've got them on my shopping wish list!

How long have you been doing your craft? Born into a rather creative and nomadic clan it was compulsory to 'make things' from an early age.

How did you get started? It was just a whim of Dana's until Caitlin returned to New Zealand from a three year stint in Canada and brought with her, her new son ( fresh inspiration), clarity and the impetus to move us from making clothes for our own children to making clothes for others and booking our first table at 'Kraftbomb'....

Describe what you create? We create hand made children's clothing that is beautiful, durable and unique.  Clothing that can be appreciated and treasured by the whole family.

What inspires you? Vintage fabric ( print, colour, weave) and patterns. Our children.  Classic style.  Remaking things. Each other.

What are your favourite materials to use? Why are they your favourite? Vintage & found fabric and notions...because it inspires us and it is always most satisfying and sustainable to use what is already existing.  we also enjoy the challenge of a limited range of possibilities, often finidng new and refreshing combinations in the imposed restraint. Natural fabric...because that's what we would put next to our own children's skin.

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date? Plucking up the courage to offer our humble creations for sale.

Do you have any future plans for your work? Continuing to be inspired by our growing children and the textile treasures that we find.

Where are your favourite places on-line? ETSY!

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to while you work, if any? Julie Doiron, Feiste, El Pero del mar, The Phoenix Foundation, Wilco, Madeliene Peyroux, CBC online, National Radio...to name a few.
If you could go back in time and give on piece of advice to yourself when you started, what would it be? Do a little each day and enjoy the creative process.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't busy making your wares? Spending time with our families, honing our urban farming skills and getting out of the city!
