Artist Interview: Chasing Rabbit

Chasing Rabbit is the gorgeous Auckland based Jewellery label by the talented Bree Dentice. We fell in love with her unique style the minute we came saw her creations. You won't forget her beautiful pieces!

How long have you been doing your craft? A few years.

How did you get started? I took jewellery making as a minor when I started my degree in visual arts back in 2003. After a couple of years I withdrew from study and moved to Australia. While I was there a lot of interesting jewellery designers started emerging and their work got me really excited about jewellery again and I decided that that was what I wanted to be doing too. So I moved back to Auckland to finish my degree (which I did last yr!), changing my major from painting to contemporary jewellery design. Last year I put a few things on etsy and 2threads & got approached by two shops: Swonderful in Wellington & Violent Green in Brisbane and now sell my stuff in their awesome shops :)

Describe what you create? Jewellery.

What inspires you? Lots of things: artists, designers, magazines, music, film, friends...

What are your favourite materials to use? Why are they your favourite? For my jewellery sterling silver is my favourite because it's so beautiful! I also like using wax because it's easy to work with & mold making because it's fun. My other passion is drawing & my 0.35mm mechanical pencil is one of my favourite pieces of equipment because it is so fine you can achieve such good detail, LOVE it!

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date? I'm not sure about big achievements, but small ones along the way. I recently had two of my drawings included in an all girl exhibition in L.A, even though I couldn't go I was pretty excited as it's the first show I've taken part in :)

Do you have any future plans for your work? First I'm focusing on making new pieces. Once I have a bigger collection together I plan on approaching a few stores that I would like to have my jewellery stocked.

Where are your favourite places on-line? I've been spending a lot of time on flickr, I love going through the photos in the art groups. I've discovered so many great works and artists that I probably wouldn't come across otherwise.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to while you work, if any? Lykke Li, Bat for Lashes, Florence and the Machine, Beach House, The XX, Julie Doiron, Nouvelle Vague & lots more.

If you could go back in time and give on piece of advice to yourself when you started, what would it be? Well I've only recently started, but I've been practicing procrastination for quite some time & I'm very good at it. Less daydreaming and more actual doing. (Refer to link!)

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't busy making your wares? At the moment I really enjoy watching foreign & festival films, drawing, catching up with friends (although I don't do it enough!)
